Turkey is selling everything.

Gold reserves? Gone...straight down, at a pace that looks like desperation on a chart. US Treasuries? Liquidating those too. The Turkish lira? Hanging by a thread, devaluing in slow motion.

Every mainstream outlet will frame this as geopolitics. Erdogan playing hardball. An emerging market grudge match with Washington. That framing is not partially wrong. It is completely, categorically wrong.

Here is what is actually happening, and why it matters even if you have never traded an emerging market in your life.

The Dollar They Don’t Have

Turkey isn’t selling gold to make a statement. Turkey isn’t selling treasuries because it’s angry about tariffs or sanctions. Turkey is selling both because it is desperate for dollars.

That’s it. Full stop.

The mechanism is brutally simple. Turkey imports oil. Oil is priced in dollars. If Turkey doesn’t have dollars, it can’t buy oil. So when oil prices surge...as they did when Russia invaded Ukraine, as they did again when Middle East conflict erupted...Turkey has to find dollars fast. Any way it can.

First, it sold gold. Its central bank had spent years building a substantial gold reserve, a genuine effort to diversify away from the dollar system. Then the oil shock hit, and that reserve became an ATM. The chart tells the story without words: straight down, no hesitation.

When the gold wasn’t enough, Turkey turned to its US Treasury holdings. Same logic, same urgency. Different asset, same exit.

The total hit? Turkey’s official reserves cratered by $43 billion in a single monthly decline, a record. Its current account deficit widened to $9.7 billion from $7.3 billion the prior month, driven almost entirely by soaring commodity costs. The central bank raised its year-end inflation target to 24%.

Here’s the part the de-dollarization crowd never wants to talk about: Turkey was supposedly moving away from dollars. It was buying gold, building reserves, talking a good game. And the moment a real dollar crisis hit, it sold every ounce of that gold as fast as it could...to get dollars.

De-dollarization is a theory. Dollar dependency is a fact.

Two Problems, One Answer...and What Happens When It Runs Out

There’s a secondary pressure beyond oil imports that makes Turkey’s position even more precarious. Turkey also needed those dollars to buy back lira, to prop up its own currency against the very dollar it was supposedly moving away from.

Think about what that means. Turkey was simultaneously selling gold to buy dollars to pay for oil, and selling gold to buy dollars to defend its own currency. One crisis, two dollar needs, one rapidly shrinking pile of reserves.

And here’s the kicker. When Turkey doesn’t have enough dollars to defend the lira, it has to sell lira instead. That sells the currency down further, which raises the lira-denominated cost of oil imports even more, which requires even more dollars to cover the gap. The spiral doesn’t stop. It accelerates.

So if Turkey spent years deliberately accumulating gold and treasury holdings as dollar alternatives, only to liquidate all of it in a matter of months just to stay liquid...what does that actually tell you about the durability of dollar dominance?

The Fed and the Treasury are propping up a system on the verge of collapse, and the swap lines are the smoking gun.

Come on, now.

That narrative has exactly one thing going for it: it sounds compelling. But once the actual mechanics get unpacked, the story runs almost perfectly backwards. It’s precisely because the dollar is so structurally irreplaceable that every major oil-importing economy on the planet is standing in line asking for one.

The real signal buried inside this story is profoundly uncomfortable for anyone who has spent the last three years positioned for the dollar to roll over.

What a Dollar Swap Line Is (And What It Isn’t)

The mechanics are simple enough that the hysteria surrounding US dollar swap lines becomes immediately puzzling once you actually understand them.

Two central banks. One agreement. The Federal Reserve deposits dollars into a foreign central bank’s account. That central bank deposits an equivalent amount of its own currency into the Fed’s account. At a specified future date...typically within 90 days...the transaction reverses. Both parties get their original currency back, and the Fed collects a modest interest payment.

That’s it.

Think of it as a repo transaction but instead of using Treasuries and dollars as the two legs, you’re using dollars and a foreign currency. The Fed has operated these arrangements since the early 1960s, deploying them during the 2008 Global Financial Crisis and reactivating them for COVID in March 2020.

What a swap line is not: a bailout in the traditional sense. The dollars are always returned. No new dollars enter the broader economy. No quantitative easing. No money printing. The cash goes from the Fed to a foreign central bank and stays on institutional balance sheets until the reversal. The foreign currency that flows the other direction just sits in the Fed’s account collecting interest...largely inert.

Why Japan and the UAE Are Lining Up for Dollars

So why is everyone suddenly asking for one?

The Iran war and the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz created a dollar-funding crunch that cuts to the core of how oil-importing economies function. Japan imports roughly 95% of its oil from the Middle East, with around 70% transiting the Strait. When that route effectively closed, the dollar cost of securing oil intensified. Japanese corporations need dollars to buy oil, and when those dollars aren’t available through normal channels, they have to get them somewhere.

Here’s where the FX mechanics matter.

If a Japanese corporation can’t get dollars from its central bank, it goes to the foreign exchange market. It sells yen, buys dollars, and uses those dollars to purchase the oil it needs. The problem: every yen sold outside Japan puts additional downward pressure on the yen in global FX markets. More yen circulating globally, more demand for dollars, yen depreciates further. The BOJ has been intervening to defend the critical 160 yen-per-dollar threshold... literally spending dollar reserves to stop its own currency from collapsing... and this is precisely the dynamic a swap line short-circuits.

When the central bank has the dollars sitting in its own account, the corporation can get what it needs without touching global FX at all. The yen stays contained. No spillover.

The UAE situation follows the same logic with one additional wrinkle. The dirham has been pegged to the US dollar since 1997 at a fixed rate of 3.6725 AED per USD. That peg is a cornerstone of UAE monetary policy. Maintaining it requires a stable, reliable supply of dollars. When Strait of Hormuz disruptions cut off oil revenue while simultaneously raising dollar demand, the UAE Central Bank governor flew to Washington. Not because the UAE is in financial distress... the country holds roughly $285 billion in foreign reserves...but because the nature of the stress is liquidity, not solvency. A swap line is insurance against the dollar crunch that peg defense requires.

Gulf allies and Asian partners requested the arrangements as backstops. Bessent framed that as proof of dollar primacy. He’s right in the narrow sense. Where the framing gets promotional is in implying the US is doing these countries a favor by keeping them loyal to the dollar. The truth is more blunt: they don’t have a realistic alternative. Not because they haven’t considered it... but because no other currency comes close to the dollar’s network effect. Until something arrives that isn’t just marginally better but exponentially better, countries aren’t walking away. Swap line or no swap line.

Because every one of those layoffs...and every one that follows...isn’t just a story about employment. It’s a story about the one force keeping this market at all-time highs. And that force runs on paychecks.

S&P 500 Passive Flows: Why Jobs Are the Only Number That Actually Matters

Forget PE ratios for a moment. Forget earnings guidance. Forget what the Fed said and what the yield curve is doing.

Here’s the actual reason the S&P 500 has managed to shrug off almost everything for the last thirty years and keep grinding toward new highs: every month, a fixed percentage of nearly every working American’s paycheck flows automatically into an index fund. Not discretionary. Not subject to mood or headlines or geopolitical panic. Just...automatic. Payroll comes in. The allocation goes out. Month after month, year after year.

That non-discretionary, mechanical inflow is the bid that never goes away. Geopolitical shock hits? The discretionary traders panic and sell. The market drops for two weeks. But eventually the sellers finish. And the next payroll cycle arrives. And the bid resets.

Net passive inflows: market goes up. Net passive outflows: market goes down. That’s the whole machine.

Which means the single variable that actually matters for the S&P 500’s long-term direction isn’t a Fed pivot or a tariff announcement. It’s jobs. Specifically: how many people have a paycheck to allocate this month?

And here’s the wrinkle that changes everything. Not all paychecks are created equal.

A hundred thousand white-collar workers contribute disproportionately more to passive inflows than a hundred thousand blue-collar workers. The finance professional. The software engineer. The office administrator with a 401(k) on autopilot. These are the workers who fund the machine at scale. And these are precisely the workers that AI is targeting first.

So here’s the question nobody is asking out loud: what happens to the passive bid when the white-collar workers who support it most start disappearing at scale?

AI Job Displacement: What Anthropic’s Own Data Reveals About Which Workers Are at Risk

In February 2026, Anthropic published a labor market study unlike anything that had come before it. Not theoretical projections. Not guesswork about what AI might eventually do. Actual usage data from millions of real conversations with Claude, mapped against the Department of Labor’s occupational database. They called the resulting metric “observed exposure.”

The chart that came out of it is one of the most important visuals in macro analysis right now.

The blue area represents theoretical AI capability...what large language models could do across a given set of job tasks if fully deployed. The red area represents what AI is actually doing right now, based on real professional usage patterns. The gap between the two is the runway still ahead.

Start with the jobs that are largely untouchable. Transport workers: 12.1% theoretical exposure. Agriculture: 15.7%. Construction: 16.9%. Food service: 16.9%. Ground maintenance: 3.9%.

These are jobs that require physical presence and hands-on judgment. Nearly immune to the current displacement wave. As white-collar wages get compressed and these trades become scarcer relative to demand, wages here may actually rise.

Now look at the other end.

Computer and math: 94.3% theoretical exposure. Business and finance: 94.3%. Management: 91.3%. Office and administrative support: 90%. Legal: 89%. Architecture and engineering: 84.8%.

These are the exact occupations that generate the income, the 401(k) contributions, the automatic passive allocations that have been flowing into the S&P 500 for decades.

And Anthropic’s own researchers note that the gap between theoretical capability and observed usage isn’t permanent. Their report is explicit: as capabilities advance and deployment deepens, observed exposure expands toward the theoretical ceiling. The question isn’t whether it gets there. It’s how fast.

The layoff data is already moving in that direction. More than 113,000 tech workers have been cut across 179 distinct layoff events in 2026. That’s an average of 825 job losses per day. 2026 is already running at a pace to rival the record 2023 total.

Meta’s 8,000-person cut, effective May 20, representing roughly 10% of its global workforce, is the single most watched event in that 2026 total. But it isn’t alone. Amazon eliminated 30,000 corporate positions since October 2025, representing roughly 10% of its white-collar workforce. Oracle cut a comparable number in late March. Snap, Cisco, Google: the list grows each week.

What’s different from the 2022–2023 rightsizing cycle is the stated rationale. Pandemic over-hiring was the excuse then. Now, executives are pointing explicitly to AI... and even where that framing is partly cover for routine cost-cutting, it signals where organizational strategy is headed. The intent is to substitute compute for headcount going forward. And that substitution is concentrating in the exact occupational categories that Anthropic’s own data identifies as most exposed.

When Passive Flows Reverse: The S&P 500 Feedback Loop Nobody Is Running

This is where the analysis stops being a trend story and becomes a structural risk story.

During April’s rally, the S&P 500 added roughly $10 trillion in market cap. But market cap figures can be misleading. When a single share trades at a higher price, every other share in that company gets marked to that price, and aggregate market cap jumps by multiples of the actual dollars that changed hands. According to analyst Mike Green’s calculation, something in the range of $400 billion in actual net inflows drove that entire $10 trillion market cap move. Extraordinary leverage between cash in and notional value created.

That leverage is fine when flows are positive. It becomes a serious problem when they reverse.

Baby boomers are retiring at scale. They don’t accumulate passive investments...they draw them down. That’s a structural headwind to passive inflows that was already building before AI entered the picture. Layer on top of it a systematic reduction in white-collar employment and the arithmetic looks very different.

No hiring, no firing...just a slow freeze. That’s been the labor market narrative for most of the last eighteen months. But the AI-driven white-collar displacement now accelerating isn’t a freeze. It’s a directed reduction. And the workers being removed aren’t randomly distributed across the economy. They’re concentrated precisely where passive flows originate.

Think about what that implies for the chain reaction.

Fewer white-collar jobs leads to fewer passive inflows. Fewer inflows weaken the S&P bid. A weaker bid eventually means lower asset prices. Lower asset prices erode consumer confidence. Eroding confidence accelerates hiring freezes. Hiring freezes tip into actual layoffs. And the cycle feeds itself.

A slow-moving train wreck is the right analogy here. Once the train picks up speed going downhill, there’s nothing stopping it...just as there was nothing stopping it going uphill. Thirty years of passive inflows building momentum in one direction has been extraordinary to watch. The same mechanical force working in reverse will be equally powerful. And equally indifferent.

Lower Mortgage Rates and Housing: Why Rate Cuts Won’t Save This Market

The conventional wisdom says: Fed cuts rates, mortgages get cheaper, housing recovers. It sounds reasonable. It’s also the wrong mental model for the current environment.

Higher rates aren’t inherently bad for housing. It depends entirely on why rates are moving. If rates rise because the economy is strong...because wages are rising, inflation is running, aggregate demand is robust... then those higher monthly mortgage payments get absorbed by households whose incomes are also rising. That’s what happened after COVID. That’s why housing prices didn’t collapse despite the most aggressive rate-hiking cycle in decades.

The problem is when rates rise into a weakening economy. Or when rates fall specifically because the economy is collapsing. That’s the 2008 pattern. Oil went to $147. The ECB hiked on July 3, 2008...into an economy already in early-stage crisis. The rate hike made things worse. When rates then fell sharply, that wasn’t a cure. It was a signal that the disease was advanced.

Apply that logic now. If the Fed delivers meaningful, sustained rate cuts in the months ahead, the honest question is: why? Not a hedge-your-bets adjustment in a neutral economy, but real accommodation. That kind of cutting happens when the labor market is deteriorating fast...when credit stress is building... when conditions are deteriorating in ways that make households less willing or able to buy homes regardless of the monthly payment.

Lower rates don’t help housing if the people who would buy a home have been laid off.

Which brings the analysis to the luxury end of the housing market specifically. Toll Brothers, the nation’s leading builder of luxury homes, occupies a telling position in this framework. The company builds primarily for high-income buyers: the affluent professional, the corporate executive, the category of buyer most likely to carry an outsized passive investment account...and also most likely to be among the white-collar workers facing AI-driven employment disruption.

Toll Brothers sits outside the S&P 500. That means it receives no passive bid. No automatic, non-discretionary monthly inflow from America’s payroll cycle props its stock price the way it props S&P components. In a pairs-trade framework, the structure of long SPY / short TOL captures two directional forces simultaneously: long the passive bid that keeps the index supported regardless of fundamentals, short a business that faces headwinds in both rate scenarios (up or down) and whose primary buyer base is the exact cohort most directly exposed to AI-driven job displacement.

This is not a trading recommendation. There are no certainties, only probabilities. But the probabilities align from multiple directions at once... and when that kind of convergence shows up, it’s worth understanding why.

What to Watch

The metric that matters most going forward isn’t the headline jobs number. It’s the composition. How many of the jobs being created are the kind that fund a 401(k) and allocate to an index fund each month? How many of the jobs being lost are in the white-collar categories that Anthropic’s own usage data identifies as most exposed?

The market can sustain a slow reduction in passive inflows for a while. Momentum is real. But once net outflows arrive...pushed by boomer retirements, AI-driven white-collar displacement, and whatever credit event eventually materializes... the same mechanical force that has driven the S&P higher for thirty years works in reverse.

No drama. Just arithmetic.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics dropped the April CPI on Tuesday morning: headline inflation at 3.8% year over year, the highest reading since May 2023, a full half-point above March, beating consensus by a tenth. The next day, PPI arrived. Final demand producer prices rose 1.4% for the month...nearly three times the 0.5% consensus...pushing the annual rate to 6.0%, the highest since December 2022. Friday delivered a one-two finish: the Empire State Manufacturing Index for May surged to 19.6 against an expectation of roughly 7, and industrial production for April came in at plus 0.7% month-over-month, more than double the consensus estimate of 0.3%.

Markets noticed. The 10-year Treasury yield closed the week near 4.57%, its highest level in about a year, as bond traders repriced the entire inflation and rate outlook in the span of 72 hours.

And then, tucked beneath the inflation headlines, India quietly doubled its import duties on gold. Effective May 13, the levy on bullion went from 6% to 15%. A day later, the government capped duty-free import quantities and tightened authorization rules for jewelers. Prime Minister Modi had already gone on television the weekend before to ask citizens, personally, to stop buying gold for a year.

The question is: what does India’s gold policy have to do with American CPI data, a surging 10-year yield, and the chorus of voices predicting that the dollar is about to crater?

Consumer sentiment just hit a record low. Not a recent record. Not a post-COVID record. According to the University of Michigan’s Survey of Consumers, which has tracked confidence since November 1952, the preliminary reading for May 2026 came in at 48.2. The lowest ever recorded in 74 years of data. Lower than June 2022. Lower than the financial crisis. Lower than anything in the history of the series.

And the mainstream explanation? Gas prices.

“Consumers continue to feel buffeted by cost pressures, led by soaring prices at the pump,” said Joanne Hsu, the survey’s director. The implication is tidy: war drove up fuel, fuel drove down sentiment, end the war, end the problem. Simple as that.

Here’s the thing about that explanation: the data doesn’t support it.

So here’s the real question hiding in the numbers: if gas prices, adjusted for inflation, don’t look dramatically worse than they did in 2012...what is Whirlpool actually telling you when they say their sales look like the GFC?

Whirlpool just said the R-word.

Not the abstract version. Not the “we’re seeing some softness” version. The actual word, on the actual earnings call, with a number attached. And then the stock dropped 20%.

The framing inside the Whirlpool 8-K press release was that the Iran war did it. Consumer confidence collapsed in late February and March, the appliance industry contracted at levels not seen outside the global financial crisis, and the company is suspending its dividend, raising prices, and cutting costs. Wrap a bow around it... blame the Middle East, point to oil, move on.

The trouble is that this story keeps arriving everywhere at once. McDonald’s said the consumer environment is “certainly not improving and may be getting a little bit worse.” Domino’s missed on revenue and EPS. Chipotle flagged March softness. The University of Michigan consumer sentiment index printed the lowest reading in the survey’s 74-year history. And the National Restaurant Association’s Restaurant Performance Index rolled back into contraction in March.

If the story were just Iran and oil, you’d expect to see one or two CEOs flagging it. Not the dishwasher people, the burger people, the burrito people, and the pizza people all simultaneously discovering that the consumer broke during the same six-week stretch.

Something else is going on. And the way to see it is not by squinting harder at gas prices.

Take a few weeks away from the financial news cycle... and something funny happens. The story that was the story... vanishes.

A month ago every Wall Street outlet was breathlessly tracking private credit redemption gates. Then the Iran war hit and oil became the entire conversation. Somewhere along the way, the private credit angle quietly rolled off the front page.

On Friday, March 27, something happened in markets that almost nobody in mainstream financial media connected the dots on. WTI crude oil surged to $99.64 per barrel, up $5.16 or 5.46% for the session, pushing briefly past the psychologically important $100 handle. Brent closed at $114.10. Gold was up. And the 2-year Treasury yield...fell.

If your first reaction is “so what,” you haven’t been watching the pattern that’s dominated markets for the past several weeks. Because that’s not how this is supposed to work.

When Oil Surges to $100 and Treasury Yields Fall: The Setup That Broke the Pattern

For the better part of the past month, the macro trade has been playing out in one direction: oil goes up, interest rates go up, gold goes down. The logic is simple enough. So the mainstream inflation narrative had a clean, consistent, reinforcing story.

And then came the price action.

Oil surges nearly six percent in a single session. Under the pattern that has held for weeks, the 2-year Treasury should spike. Gold should roll over. The 10-year Treasury yield barely budged, inching up just two basis points to 4.42%...which is already unusual given the oil move. But the 2-year Treasury yield closed down roughly eight basis points to 3.91%. Gold was up. That’s a bull steepener...the yield curve steepening because short-term rates are falling, not because long-term rates are rising. It’s the exact opposite of everything we’ve been seeing.

One day is one day. Could be noise. But when a single session produces this kind of price action...completely inverted from an established multi-week pattern, on a session when oil is doing something extreme...it goes on the list of things to pay very close attention to.

The market has a verdict. Oil is spiking. CPI is elevated. The labor market is softening. Conclusion: stagflation. Lock it in. Call CNBC. Panic.

There’s just one problem. That verdict is wrong.

Not because the inflationary pressures aren’t real. They are. Not because the oil shock doesn’t matter. It absolutely does. The problem is more fundamental: most people calling “stagflation” right now don’t actually understand what they’re saying. And the bond market...the one place where real money goes to express real convictions...is quietly signaling something very different.

The word “stagflation” gets thrown around like a curse every time energy prices spike and growth disappoints simultaneously. But if you use it correctly, it means accelerating inflation...not just high prices, but prices that keep accelerating higher...combined with a stagnating economy. That’s the strict definition. The 2-year Treasury just made a 30-basis-point move in five days.

That is not noise. That is the bond market telling you something...and right now, it’s telling you that the Fed’s rate-cutting cycle might be over before it properly started. When the two-year yield traded as high as 3.97% intraday on Thursday against a Fed funds range of 3.5% to 3.75%...you had a market that, for a brief moment, was pricing in the possibility of a Fed rate hike. Not a pause. An actual hike.

Let that sink in.

The catalyst wasn’t hard to find. On Wednesday, the BLS dropped the February Producer Price Index...and it wasn’t pretty. Headline PPI came in at 0.7% month-over-month against an expectation of 0.3%...more than double what economists had penciled in. On an annual basis, wholesale inflation jumped to 3.4%, the highest reading in a year. Then Thursday morning, initial jobless claims came in at 205,000 for the week ending March 14, beating the expected 215,000...the lowest level since January...and the two-year ripped right back toward 4%.

The stagflation trade was fully on.

Add in a war in the Persian Gulf that has crude oil trading at multi-year highs, a Fed that just delivered a hawkish hold while admitting publicly it can’t project anything with confidence, and a bond market now assigning a non-trivial probability to the unthinkable...and you’ve got a financial environment that is, in almost every detail, a photocopy of the summer of 2008.

So the question isn’t whether the market is right to panic about inflation. The question is whether it’s looking at the right historical playbook...because the last time this exact setup played out, the central banks that raised rates to fight the oil shock didn’t just get it wrong. This week, the private credit industry moved from part one to part two. Publicly. Out loud. And the guy doing the talking is the co-president of one of the largest private credit lenders on the planet.

John Zito, co-president of Apollo Global Management’s asset management arm, spoke to clients at a UBS conference last month in remarks first published by the Wall Street Journal and confirmed by CNBC.

What he said deserves to sit on a line by itself:

“I literally think all the marks are wrong.”

All of them. Every single private equity valuation in the space. Mismarked. Overstated. Too high. Not by a rounding error. By enough that loans to typical mid-size software companies could recover somewhere between 20 and 40 cents on the dollar when things go sideways.

The mainstream take is that Zito is just being refreshingly candid while positioning Apollo as the grown-up in the room. Their software exposure is less than 2% of total assets under management. Their book is 95% investment grade. They’re the careful ones...the ones who will be buying distressed assets at pennies on the dollar once the unraveling begins.

Maybe. But if the co-president of one of the industry’s biggest lenders is publicly saying every valuation in private markets is wrong...and a GFC-type event is his base case for the next 12 to 18 months...who exactly is going to be selling those assets at distressed prices?

Then Blackstone. Then BlackRock.

Then Morgan Stanley capped withdrawals from its North Haven Private Income Fund at 5%, returning roughly $169 million to investors who had requested more than double that amount.

Then Cliffwater’s $33 billion flagship Corporate Lending Fund...investors tried to pull 14% of assets in a single quarter. They got 7%. Half.

Then Deutsche Bank disclosed €26 billion in private credit exposure, flagging it as a “key risk” in its annual report. The stock fell more than 7% in Frankfurt trading that same session.

All of this in the span of roughly a week.

There’s a Jamie Dimon line worth keeping in mind here: when you see one cockroach, there are probably more. What’s happening right now isn’t the end of the cockroach count. It’s the beginning. And every single time a major institution caps redemptions, the same narrative gets recycled...isolated stress, fortress balance sheets, contained exposure. It’s the same script they ran when Bernanke told Congress subprime was contained.

Different chapter. Same story.

That’s what the Bureau of Economic Analysis told you when it released the advance estimate for Q4 2025 GDP back in January. Not great, but not alarming. Certainly not something to keep you up at night. The economy was still grinding forward. Central planners were congratulating themselves. Wall Street was nodding along.

Then the revision came out.

The BEA’s second estimate for Q4 2025 real GDP didn’t trim the number. It cut it in half. 0.7%. That’s the actual annualized growth rate of the largest economy on earth in the final quarter of last year. Consumer spending...downwardly revised. Exports...downwardly revised. Government spending...negative. Investment...downwardly revised. Broad-based doesn’t begin to cover it.

Here’s what makes this moment different from the usual “noisy data” hand-waving you’ll get from the financial media: this is a pattern. And as regular readers know, patterns matter more than any single data point.

The non-farm payroll numbers have been telling this story for months. February’s print came in at negative 92,000 jobs, far worse than forecasts of a 59,000 gain. December was revised from +48,000 all the way down to negative 17,000. The annual benchmark revision for 2025 slashed total yearly job creation from over 1.2 million down to just 181,000...the second-largest downward revision on record, trailing only the 2009 financial crisis. And out of the last nine months, five have now printed negative after revisions.

Go look at a historical chart of non-farm payrolls and try to find a nine-month stretch where more than half the readings were negative, outside of a recession. Take your time. You won’t find it.

So the question isn’t whether the data is deteriorating. It is. The question is what’s driving it, how much further it has to run, and why the feedback loops that are already forming could make what comes next significantly worse than the headline numbers suggest.

And that’s exactly what the mainstream narrative isn’t connecting.

There’s a script. Every institution has it, and every institution follows it.

It goes like this: “We have no significant exposure to the risks in question. Our balance sheet is well-diversified. We remain confident in our long-term fundamentals.” And so on. It’s boilerplate. It’s theater. And by now, any regular reader of this publication knows exactly what those words actually mean.

They mean the opposite.

In the days before Bear Stearns cratered. In the week before Lehman stopped answering the phone. The words were the same. The stock charts told a different story. And the stock charts, as usual, were right.

So here we are in 2026, and the script is being read again. Deutsche Bank just flagged $30 billion in exposure to private credit in its annual report. Morgan Stanley just capped investor redemptions in its private credit fund. Software-heavy loan portfolios are deteriorating. Layoffs are being announced. And the official narrative from every corner of the financial complex is: nothing to worry about. It’s AI. It’s a transition. It’s shareholder value creation.

Come on. Come on.

The private credit market is not quietly imploding. It stopped being quiet months ago. What we’re watching now is a slow-motion train wreck that’s been picking up speed, and the question every serious investor needs to be asking isn’t whether this is a problem. The question is how far this thing has left to run.

There’s a script these things always follow. A crack appears. The institutions most exposed call it minor, contained, a preemptive move. They assure everyone the rest of the balance sheet is bulletproof. Nobody panics. And then...a few months later, they’re talking about something they swore wasn’t a problem.

JP Morgan just read from that script. Word for word.

The story, confirmed by sources close to the situation and reported by Bloomberg, is that JP Morgan has been marking down the collateral backing its loans to private credit funds and restricting new lending to those same funds. The collateral in question: loans made by private credit firms to software companies. Companies, it turns out, that the market is no longer sure have a viable business model three years from now.

This isn’t JP Morgan taking losses. That’s what they’ll tell you. This is them being “preemptive.” This is them “pumping the brakes” rather than hitting a wall.

Come on. Come on.

Does anyone remember a credit event in history that started with the institutions involved announcing that everything was on fire? Lehman wasn’t the beginning of the GFC. It was the end of the denial phase. The beginning looked exactly like this: a markdown here, a lending restriction there, a spokesperson saying “this is not systemic” into a CNBC camera.

Oil was trading around $84, $85 a barrel. Then, in roughly the time it takes to read a social media post twice, it cratered to a $76 handle. Not over hours. Not over days. Seconds. One of the most essential commodities on the planet was trading like a meme stock...like Dogecoin on a Tuesday afternoon.

The cause? A single post on X from the U.S. Energy Secretary indicating the U.S. Navy had escorted an oil tanker through the Strait of Hormuz. A few uncomfortable minutes passed. Then someone apparently made a very uncomfortable phone call. The tweet disappeared. The Secretary’s page went dark. And oil ripped back above $81 almost as fast as it had fallen.

CNBC scrambled. Anchors were pulling each other back in front of cameras mid-segment. “The post does not exist,” one reporter said, reading back what the platform told her. The intraday low was $76.73. By the time the deletion was confirmed, WTI was already recovering. The whole episode, start to finish, lasted minutes.

Now, the mainstream take is that this was a bizarre one-off...a government communications fumble that created a momentary pricing glitch. Move on, nothing to see here.

That’s the wrong read. Completely wrong. Because the flash crash didn’t create a distortion in the oil price. It accidentally revealed one that was already there.

So what does the size and speed of that move actually tell you about the $84 oil price that existed before the tweet ever went out?

Drum Roll Please: The Hidden Number Inside That Price

Let’s think this one through.

Before the Middle East conflict escalated, the U.S. economy was already showing its seams. Non-farm payrolls printed at negative 92,000. Private credit markets were starting to wobble in ways that don’t make the front page until they absolutely have to.

The broader backdrop...tariffs, slowing global demand, a labor market deteriorating faster than official narratives were admitting...pointed toward weakening energy consumption, not strength. None of that is a setup for $85 oil.

So where would oil actually be trading if you stripped out the Strait of Hormuz premium entirely? Based on what the flash crash just showed, the answer is: a hell of a lot lower. Probably the low 60s. Possibly the 50s. That deleted tweet didn’t represent a seven or eight dollar move in oil. It represented a window into the number that was hiding underneath the geopolitical noise all along.

Come on now. You don’t need a PhD to see what just happened. The market showed its hand. A single disappearing post shaved seven or eight dollars off the barrel price in seconds, then put it back just as fast when the geopolitical risk was re-affirmed by its absence. That is not normal commodity volatility. That is a market being held together by a premium that could evaporate on a single press conference.

And here’s why that matters far beyond the oil price itself.

High oil is a tax. Let’s take it to an extreme to make the mechanics plain: say you bring home five grand a month, $2,500 goes to fixed expenses, and $2,500 is disposable income. Now gas goes to $10, $15, $20 a gallon. What happens to that disposable income? It gets gutted. Down from $2,500 to maybe $1,000. That purchasing power doesn’t disappear quietly ... it gets pulled away from restaurants, retail, services, everything downstream. Producers can’t raise prices to compensate because demand is already falling. So what looked like inflation on the way up becomes the cause of disinflation on the way down. The oil spike that everyone calls inflationary is actually setting up the next leg of weakness. It’s the straw that breaks the camel’s back, and it’s done it before.

This is not a new playbook. The CPI spikes. The Fed gets spooked. Tightening conditions stack on top of an economy already under pressure. And then the very thing that looked inflationary triggers the demand destruction that follows.

The Futures Market Is Reading the Same Script

Here’s another data point that got underreported: oil’s term structure.

Right now, oil is in backwardation...meaning near-term contracts are trading at a meaningful premium to contracts further out. At the peak of the conflict premium, the spread between the front-month and later-dated futures was wide, $10, $15, maybe more. Even after settling back, the December 2026 contract is sitting around $70 a barrel ... roughly $16 lower than the April 2026 contract.

That spread is telling you something. Backwardation of that magnitude in a commodity like oil is not the term structure of a permanent supply disruption. It is the term structure of a market that expects this situation to resolve, and resolve relatively soon. If the market truly believed the Middle East conflict had structurally impaired oil flows for the foreseeable future, December 2026 futures would be trading far closer to April 2026 futures. They’re not. Not even close.

The smart money is pricing in resolution, not escalation. It’s also discounting the demand destruction that a prolonged high oil price would cause ... because the math isn’t complicated. An $85 oil price layered on top of a weakening economy doesn’t sustain itself. It destroys itself by destroying demand.

Futures markets are not always right. But when the flash crash and the term structure are telling the same story...a massive, temporary geopolitical premium sitting on top of a fundamentally weak demand picture...that’s not noise. That’s signal. And right now, both of those signals are pointing in the same direction.

What’s Actually Underneath the Noise

Strip out the Middle East premium and here’s the real economy you’re left with.

Non-farm payrolls at negative 92,000. Under normal conditions...meaning without an oil shock dominating every headline...that number alone would be a market-moving event. It would take oil lower, take interest rates lower, and shift the Fed’s calculus in a meaningful way. Instead, it got buried. The geopolitical premium became the story, and the labor market data became a footnote.

And then there’s the private credit situation, which deserves a lot more attention than it’s currently getting. BlackRock recently halted redemptions in one of its private credit funds above the 5% threshold built into the fund’s own structure. That’s notable. But the more important detail isn’t the halting...it’s the valuation. Assets that were being marked at 100 cents on the dollar just three months ago are now being written down to zero. One hundred cents to zero. In a single quarter.

That is not a rounding error. That is not a market correction. That is a balance sheet that was misrepresenting reality to investors for as long as the tide was in...and now the tide is going out.

As regular readers know, private credit has been functioning as a shadow extension of the credit cycle for years, absorbing risks that traditional banks offloaded and packaging them into vehicles that got marked at par because nobody wanted to price them honestly. Now the marks are starting to tell the truth. My base case is that BlackRock is not the last name on this list. Not by a long shot. The private credit blowup looks like the fifth or sixth inning, not the ninth. There is a lot of tied left to go out.

Here’s how all of this connects back to the Fed. Right now, the central bank is frozen.

The oil spike has pushed short-term inflation expectations high enough that a rate cut at the next meeting looks like a non-starter. The market is pricing in essentially zero probability of a cut in the near term. But that calculus flips the moment the geopolitical premium starts unwinding. When oil drops, yields drop with it, and the NFP data comes back into focus, the probability of Fed cuts in the second half of 2026 rises fast. The market reprices. Quickly.

What to Watch...and Where the Setup Lives

The two-year Treasury is the tell here.

At roughly 3.6%, the two-year is baking in close to zero probability of Fed rate cuts. The market is saying: inflation is still the dominant risk, oil is still elevated, and the Fed isn’t moving. That is the current price of the geopolitical premium, expressed in yield terms.

That picture changes fast if and when the situation in the Strait resolves. And here’s the political reality: Trump will claim victory. Whether the underlying facts support the claim is a separate question entirely...and one that will not slow him down for a single moment. The narrative will be packaged, the press conference will be held, and the exit will be declared a triumph. That’s the MO, and recognizing the MO is not a political statement, it’s just pattern recognition.

When that moment comes...and the oil price drops back toward the low 60s, and the geopolitical justification for elevated yields disappears...the two-year Treasury is going to reprice to reflect something closer to the real economy. An economy with a negative NFP print. An economy with private credit stress spreading across balance sheets. An economy where the consumer’s disposable income has been quietly taxed by months of elevated oil. If the probability of Fed cuts moves from near zero back to even 25 or 30%, that is a significant move in the two-year. Not a small one.

There are no certainties here, only probabilities. But the flash crash already gave away more than the mainstream read is crediting. It revealed the size of the premium. The term structure confirmed the market sees it as temporary. The labor market data and the private credit news confirmed the underlying economy was already softening before any of this started.

Watch the Strait of Hormuz for signs of re-opening. Watch the oil term structure...if the backwardation starts flattening, that’s the early signal the premium is unwinding. Watch the private credit headlines, because BlackRock is the canary and the coal mine goes a lot deeper than one fund. And watch the two-year yield, because when it starts moving, it will not move slowly.

The spring home buying season is here. And the mainstream financial press is already warming up its script: lower mortgage rates, pent-up demand, eager buyers waiting on the sidelines. Any week now, the market is going to take off.

Here’s the data they’re not leading with.

According to Redfin, approximately 45,000 homes that were de-listed in 2025 have come back onto the market in January 2026, the highest re-listing number since Redfin began tracking de-listings back in 2016.

December alone saw a record 112,000 de-listings. And here’s the detail that tells you everything: one-third of those re-listings came back at a cheaper price than when they were pulled.

Think about what that actually means.

If you’re re-listing your home at a lower price, you didn’t take it off the market because the timing wasn’t right. You took it off because you couldn’t get what you wanted. You spent months watching the calendar flip, hoping spring would bring a flood of buyers willing to pay your number. And now you’re back, asking for less. You’re not re-listing from a position of strength. You’re re-listing from a position of desperation, and the data is showing that this describes roughly a third of everyone who de-listed last year.
