That pattern held every single time at the start of this Middle East conflict. Every time crude spiked, the bond market flinched, rates climbed, and the macro story wrote itself: energy prices up means input costs up means the Fed stays higher for longer. Straightforward. Mechanical. Predictable.

Except that pattern just broke.

Last week, WTI crude surged from roughly $100 a barrel to north of $110... a move of more than 10% in a single week... and during that exact same stretch, the 2-year Treasury yield moved lower. Oil surging. Rates declining. At the same time.

That’s not noise. That’s not an algorithm misfiring. That’s the market quietly repricing something enormous... and most of the financial press hasn’t noticed yet.

So what’s the market actually saying... and why does that shift have everything to do with the private credit crisis that’s accelerating right now?

On Friday, March 27, something happened in markets that almost nobody in mainstream financial media connected the dots on. WTI crude oil surged to $99.64 per barrel, up $5.16 or 5.46% for the session, pushing briefly past the psychologically important $100 handle. Brent closed at $114.10. Gold was up. And the 2-year Treasury yield...fell.

If your first reaction is “so what,” you haven’t been watching the pattern that’s dominated markets for the past several weeks. Because that’s not how this is supposed to work.

When Oil Surges to $100 and Treasury Yields Fall: The Setup That Broke the Pattern

For the better part of the past month, the macro trade has been playing out in one direction: oil goes up, interest rates go up, gold goes down. The logic is simple enough. Rising crude prices push inflation expectations higher. Higher inflation expectations make the Fed less likely to cut...maybe more likely to hike. The 2-year Treasury yield, which is the most sensitive part of the curve to Fed policy expectations, dutifully marched higher every time crude ticked up. By Friday, futures markets pushed the probability of a Fed rate hike by year-end to 52%...the first time that threshold had been crossed in this cycle. So the mainstream inflation narrative had a clean, consistent, reinforcing story.

And then came the price action.

Oil surges nearly six percent in a single session. Under the pattern that has held for weeks, the 2-year Treasury should spike. Gold should roll over. The 10-year Treasury yield barely budged, inching up just two basis points to 4.42%...which is already unusual given the oil move. But the 2-year Treasury yield closed down roughly eight basis points to 3.91%. Gold was up. That’s a bull steepener...the yield curve steepening because short-term rates are falling, not because long-term rates are rising. It’s the exact opposite of everything we’ve been seeing.

One day is one day. Could be noise. But when a single session produces this kind of price action...completely inverted from an established multi-week pattern, on a session when oil is doing something extreme...it goes on the list of things to pay very close attention to.

The market has a verdict. Oil is spiking. CPI is elevated. The labor market is softening. Conclusion: stagflation. Lock it in. Call CNBC. Panic.

There’s just one problem. That verdict is wrong.

Not because the inflationary pressures aren’t real. They are. Not because the oil shock doesn’t matter. It absolutely does. The problem is more fundamental: most people calling “stagflation” right now don’t actually understand what they’re saying. And the bond market...the one place where real money goes to express real convictions...is quietly signaling something very different.

The word “stagflation” gets thrown around like a curse every time energy prices spike and growth disappoints simultaneously. But if you use it correctly, it means accelerating inflation...not just high prices, but prices that keep accelerating higher...combined with a stagnating economy. That’s the strict definition. And here’s what history shows, without exception: you don’t get accelerating CPI alongside a labor market that’s rolling over hard. The two forces are mutually exclusive at that magnitude.

The oil shock does two things at different times. In the short run, it pushes prices higher. That’s real, and it’s already showing up. But in the long run...and we’re talking months, not decades...it destroys demand. Think about it mechanically. Your take-home pay is five grand. Fixed costs take twenty-five hundred of it. That leaves twenty-five hundred in discretionary spending. Now gas doubles. Nobody’s installing a storage tank in the backyard. You’re cutting something else. Multiply that across an economy already carrying a GDP that was quietly revised down to 0.7% and a labor market printing negative non-farm payrolls...and the arithmetic becomes brutal.

Short run, yes...probably higher consumer prices. But you know how this movie ends. The question is how long the middle runs.

And the real question...the one worth asking before the financial media has a chance to answer it for you...is what history actually shows happens every single time this same combination of variables lines up. Because the last time this exact setup played out, the central bankers who looked at surging oil and rising CPI and called it a structural inflation problem didn’t just get it wrong. The 2-year Treasury just made a 30-basis-point move in five days.

That is not noise. That is the bond market telling you something...and right now, it’s telling you that the Fed’s rate-cutting cycle might be over before it properly started. When the two-year yield traded as high as 3.97% intraday on Thursday against a Fed funds range of 3.5% to 3.75%...you had a market that, for a brief moment, was pricing in the possibility of a Fed rate hike. Not a pause. An actual hike.

Let that sink in.

The catalyst wasn’t hard to find. On Wednesday, the BLS dropped the February Producer Price Index...and it wasn’t pretty. Headline PPI came in at 0.7% month-over-month against an expectation of 0.3%...more than double what economists had penciled in. On an annual basis, wholesale inflation jumped to 3.4%, the highest reading in a year. Then Thursday morning, initial jobless claims came in at 205,000 for the week ending March 14, beating the expected 215,000...the lowest level since January...and the two-year ripped right back toward 4%.

The stagflation trade was fully on.

Add in a war in the Persian Gulf that has crude oil trading at multi-year highs, a Fed that just delivered a hawkish hold while admitting publicly it can’t project anything with confidence, and a bond market now assigning a non-trivial probability to the unthinkable...and you’ve got a financial environment that is, in almost every detail, a photocopy of the summer of 2008.

So the question isn’t whether the market is right to panic about inflation. The question is whether it’s looking at the right historical playbook...because the last time this exact setup played out, the central banks that raised rates to fight the oil shock didn’t just get it wrong. They created the preconditions for the worst deflationary collapse since the Great Depression.

John Zito, co-president of Apollo Global Management’s asset management arm, spoke to clients at a UBS conference last month in remarks first published by the Wall Street Journal and confirmed by CNBC.

What he said deserves to sit on a line by itself:

“I literally think all the marks are wrong.”

All of them. Every single private equity valuation in the space. Mismarked. Overstated. Too high. Not by a rounding error. By enough that loans to typical mid-size software companies could recover somewhere between 20 and 40 cents on the dollar when things go sideways.

The mainstream take is that Zito is just being refreshingly candid while positioning Apollo as the grown-up in the room. Their software exposure is less than 2% of total assets under management. Their book is 95% investment grade. They’re the careful ones...the ones who will be buying distressed assets at pennies on the dollar once the unraveling begins.

Maybe. But if the co-president of one of the industry’s biggest lenders is publicly saying every valuation in private markets is wrong...and a GFC-type event is his base case for the next 12 to 18 months...who exactly is going to be selling those assets at distressed prices?

Then Blackstone. Then BlackRock.

Then Morgan Stanley capped withdrawals from its North Haven Private Income Fund at 5%, returning roughly $169 million to investors who had requested more than double that amount.

Then Cliffwater’s $33 billion flagship Corporate Lending Fund...investors tried to pull 14% of assets in a single quarter. They got 7%. Half.

Then Deutsche Bank disclosed €26 billion in private credit exposure, flagging it as a “key risk” in its annual report. The stock fell more than 7% in Frankfurt trading that same session.

All of this in the span of roughly a week.

There’s a Jamie Dimon line worth keeping in mind here: when you see one cockroach, there are probably more. What’s happening right now isn’t the end of the cockroach count. It’s the beginning. And every single time a major institution caps redemptions, the same narrative gets recycled...isolated stress, fortress balance sheets, contained exposure. It’s the same script they ran when Bernanke told Congress subprime was contained.

Different chapter. Same story.

That’s what the Bureau of Economic Analysis told you when it released the advance estimate for Q4 2025 GDP back in January. Not great, but not alarming. Certainly not something to keep you up at night. The economy was still grinding forward. Central planners were congratulating themselves. Wall Street was nodding along.

Then the revision came out.

The BEA’s second estimate for Q4 2025 real GDP didn’t trim the number. It cut it in half. 0.7%. That’s the actual annualized growth rate of the largest economy on earth in the final quarter of last year. Consumer spending...downwardly revised. Exports...downwardly revised. Government spending...negative. Investment...downwardly revised. Broad-based doesn’t begin to cover it.

Here’s what makes this moment different from the usual “noisy data” hand-waving you’ll get from the financial media: this is a pattern. And as regular readers know, patterns matter more than any single data point.

The non-farm payroll numbers have been telling this story for months. February’s print came in at negative 92,000 jobs, far worse than forecasts of a 59,000 gain. December was revised from +48,000 all the way down to negative 17,000. The annual benchmark revision for 2025 slashed total yearly job creation from over 1.2 million down to just 181,000...the second-largest downward revision on record, trailing only the 2009 financial crisis. And out of the last nine months, five have now printed negative after revisions.

Go look at a historical chart of non-farm payrolls and try to find a nine-month stretch where more than half the readings were negative, outside of a recession. Take your time. You won’t find it.

So the question isn’t whether the data is deteriorating. It is. The question is what’s driving it, how much further it has to run, and why the feedback loops that are already forming could make what comes next significantly worse than the headline numbers suggest.

And that’s exactly what the mainstream narrative isn’t connecting.

There’s a script. Every institution has it, and every institution follows it.

It goes like this: “We have no significant exposure to the risks in question. Our balance sheet is well-diversified. We remain confident in our long-term fundamentals.” And so on. It’s boilerplate. It’s theater. And by now, any regular reader of this publication knows exactly what those words actually mean.

They mean the opposite.

In the days before Bear Stearns cratered. In the week before Lehman stopped answering the phone. The words were the same. The stock charts told a different story. And the stock charts, as usual, were right.

So here we are in 2026, and the script is being read again. Deutsche Bank just flagged $30 billion in exposure to private credit in its annual report. Morgan Stanley just capped investor redemptions in its private credit fund. Software-heavy loan portfolios are deteriorating. Layoffs are being announced. And the official narrative from every corner of the financial complex is: nothing to worry about. It’s AI. It’s a transition. It’s shareholder value creation.

Come on. Come on.

The private credit market is not quietly imploding. It stopped being quiet months ago. What we’re watching now is a slow-motion train wreck that’s been picking up speed, and the question every serious investor needs to be asking isn’t whether this is a problem. The question is how far this thing has left to run.

There’s a script these things always follow. A crack appears. The institutions most exposed call it minor, contained, a preemptive move. They assure everyone the rest of the balance sheet is bulletproof. Nobody panics. And then...a few months later, they’re talking about something they swore wasn’t a problem.

JP Morgan just read from that script. Word for word.

The story, confirmed by sources close to the situation and reported by Bloomberg, is that JP Morgan has been marking down the collateral backing its loans to private credit funds and restricting new lending to those same funds. The collateral in question: loans made by private credit firms to software companies. Companies, it turns out, that the market is no longer sure have a viable business model three years from now.

This isn’t JP Morgan taking losses. That’s what they’ll tell you. This is them being “preemptive.” This is them “pumping the brakes” rather than hitting a wall.

Come on. Come on.

Does anyone remember a credit event in history that started with the institutions involved announcing that everything was on fire? Lehman wasn’t the beginning of the GFC. It was the end of the denial phase. The beginning looked exactly like this: a markdown here, a lending restriction there, a spokesperson saying “this is not systemic” into a CNBC camera.

Oil was trading around $84, $85 a barrel. Then, in roughly the time it takes to read a social media post twice, it cratered to a $76 handle. Not over hours. Not over days. Seconds. One of the most essential commodities on the planet was trading like a meme stock...like Dogecoin on a Tuesday afternoon.

The cause? A single post on X from the U.S. Energy Secretary indicating the U.S. Navy had escorted an oil tanker through the Strait of Hormuz. A few uncomfortable minutes passed. Then someone apparently made a very uncomfortable phone call. The tweet disappeared. The Secretary’s page went dark. And oil ripped back above $81 almost as fast as it had fallen.

CNBC scrambled. Anchors were pulling each other back in front of cameras mid-segment. “The post does not exist,” one reporter said, reading back what the platform told her. The intraday low was $76.73. By the time the deletion was confirmed, WTI was already recovering. The whole episode, start to finish, lasted minutes.

Now, the mainstream take is that this was a bizarre one-off...a government communications fumble that created a momentary pricing glitch. Move on, nothing to see here.

That’s the wrong read. Completely wrong. Because the flash crash didn’t create a distortion in the oil price. It accidentally revealed one that was already there.

So what does the size and speed of that move actually tell you about the $84 oil price that existed before the tweet ever went out?

Drum Roll Please: The Hidden Number Inside That Price

Let’s think this one through.

Before the Middle East conflict escalated, the U.S. economy was already showing its seams. Non-farm payrolls printed at negative 92,000. Private credit markets were starting to wobble in ways that don’t make the front page until they absolutely have to.

The broader backdrop...tariffs, slowing global demand, a labor market deteriorating faster than official narratives were admitting...pointed toward weakening energy consumption, not strength. None of that is a setup for $85 oil.

So where would oil actually be trading if you stripped out the Strait of Hormuz premium entirely? Based on what the flash crash just showed, the answer is: a hell of a lot lower. Probably the low 60s. Possibly the 50s. That deleted tweet didn’t represent a seven or eight dollar move in oil. It represented a window into the number that was hiding underneath the geopolitical noise all along.

Come on now. You don’t need a PhD to see what just happened. The market showed its hand. A single disappearing post shaved seven or eight dollars off the barrel price in seconds, then put it back just as fast when the geopolitical risk was re-affirmed by its absence. That is not normal commodity volatility. That is a market being held together by a premium that could evaporate on a single press conference.

And here’s why that matters far beyond the oil price itself.

High oil is a tax. Let’s take it to an extreme to make the mechanics plain: say you bring home five grand a month, $2,500 goes to fixed expenses, and $2,500 is disposable income. Now gas goes to $10, $15, $20 a gallon. What happens to that disposable income? It gets gutted. Down from $2,500 to maybe $1,000. That purchasing power doesn’t disappear quietly ... it gets pulled away from restaurants, retail, services, everything downstream. Producers can’t raise prices to compensate because demand is already falling. So what looked like inflation on the way up becomes the cause of disinflation on the way down. The oil spike that everyone calls inflationary is actually setting up the next leg of weakness. It’s the straw that breaks the camel’s back, and it’s done it before.

This is not a new playbook. The CPI spikes. The Fed gets spooked. Tightening conditions stack on top of an economy already under pressure. And then the very thing that looked inflationary triggers the demand destruction that follows.

The Futures Market Is Reading the Same Script

Here’s another data point that got underreported: oil’s term structure.

Right now, oil is in backwardation...meaning near-term contracts are trading at a meaningful premium to contracts further out. At the peak of the conflict premium, the spread between the front-month and later-dated futures was wide, $10, $15, maybe more. Even after settling back, the December 2026 contract is sitting around $70 a barrel ... roughly $16 lower than the April 2026 contract.

That spread is telling you something. Backwardation of that magnitude in a commodity like oil is not the term structure of a permanent supply disruption. It is the term structure of a market that expects this situation to resolve, and resolve relatively soon. If the market truly believed the Middle East conflict had structurally impaired oil flows for the foreseeable future, December 2026 futures would be trading far closer to April 2026 futures. They’re not. Not even close.

The smart money is pricing in resolution, not escalation. It’s also discounting the demand destruction that a prolonged high oil price would cause ... because the math isn’t complicated. An $85 oil price layered on top of a weakening economy doesn’t sustain itself. It destroys itself by destroying demand.

Futures markets are not always right. But when the flash crash and the term structure are telling the same story...a massive, temporary geopolitical premium sitting on top of a fundamentally weak demand picture...that’s not noise. That’s signal. And right now, both of those signals are pointing in the same direction.

What’s Actually Underneath the Noise

Strip out the Middle East premium and here’s the real economy you’re left with.

Non-farm payrolls at negative 92,000. Under normal conditions...meaning without an oil shock dominating every headline...that number alone would be a market-moving event. It would take oil lower, take interest rates lower, and shift the Fed’s calculus in a meaningful way. Instead, it got buried. The geopolitical premium became the story, and the labor market data became a footnote.

And then there’s the private credit situation, which deserves a lot more attention than it’s currently getting. BlackRock recently halted redemptions in one of its private credit funds above the 5% threshold built into the fund’s own structure. That’s notable. But the more important detail isn’t the halting...it’s the valuation. Assets that were being marked at 100 cents on the dollar just three months ago are now being written down to zero. One hundred cents to zero. In a single quarter.

That is not a rounding error. That is not a market correction. That is a balance sheet that was misrepresenting reality to investors for as long as the tide was in...and now the tide is going out.

As regular readers know, private credit has been functioning as a shadow extension of the credit cycle for years, absorbing risks that traditional banks offloaded and packaging them into vehicles that got marked at par because nobody wanted to price them honestly. Now the marks are starting to tell the truth. My base case is that BlackRock is not the last name on this list. Not by a long shot. The private credit blowup looks like the fifth or sixth inning, not the ninth. There is a lot of tied left to go out.

Here’s how all of this connects back to the Fed. Right now, the central bank is frozen.

The oil spike has pushed short-term inflation expectations high enough that a rate cut at the next meeting looks like a non-starter. The market is pricing in essentially zero probability of a cut in the near term. But that calculus flips the moment the geopolitical premium starts unwinding. When oil drops, yields drop with it, and the NFP data comes back into focus, the probability of Fed cuts in the second half of 2026 rises fast. The market reprices. Quickly.

What to Watch...and Where the Setup Lives

The two-year Treasury is the tell here.

At roughly 3.6%, the two-year is baking in close to zero probability of Fed rate cuts. The market is saying: inflation is still the dominant risk, oil is still elevated, and the Fed isn’t moving. That is the current price of the geopolitical premium, expressed in yield terms.

That picture changes fast if and when the situation in the Strait resolves. And here’s the political reality: Trump will claim victory. Whether the underlying facts support the claim is a separate question entirely...and one that will not slow him down for a single moment. The narrative will be packaged, the press conference will be held, and the exit will be declared a triumph. That’s the MO, and recognizing the MO is not a political statement, it’s just pattern recognition.

When that moment comes...and the oil price drops back toward the low 60s, and the geopolitical justification for elevated yields disappears...the two-year Treasury is going to reprice to reflect something closer to the real economy. An economy with a negative NFP print. An economy with private credit stress spreading across balance sheets. An economy where the consumer’s disposable income has been quietly taxed by months of elevated oil. If the probability of Fed cuts moves from near zero back to even 25 or 30%, that is a significant move in the two-year. Not a small one.

There are no certainties here, only probabilities. But the flash crash already gave away more than the mainstream read is crediting. It revealed the size of the premium. The term structure confirmed the market sees it as temporary. The labor market data and the private credit news confirmed the underlying economy was already softening before any of this started.

Watch the Strait of Hormuz for signs of re-opening. Watch the oil term structure...if the backwardation starts flattening, that’s the early signal the premium is unwinding. Watch the private credit headlines, because BlackRock is the canary and the coal mine goes a lot deeper than one fund. And watch the two-year yield, because when it starts moving, it will not move slowly.

The spring home buying season is here. And the mainstream financial press is already warming up its script: lower mortgage rates, pent-up demand, eager buyers waiting on the sidelines. Any week now, the market is going to take off.

Here’s the data they’re not leading with.

According to Redfin, approximately 45,000 homes that were de-listed in 2025 have come back onto the market in January 2026, the highest re-listing number since Redfin began tracking de-listings back in 2016.

December alone saw a record 112,000 de-listings. And here’s the detail that tells you everything: one-third of those re-listings came back at a cheaper price than when they were pulled.

Think about what that actually means.

If you’re re-listing your home at a lower price, you didn’t take it off the market because the timing wasn’t right. You took it off because you couldn’t get what you wanted. You spent months watching the calendar flip, hoping spring would bring a flood of buyers willing to pay your number. And now you’re back, asking for less. You’re not re-listing from a position of strength. You’re re-listing from a position of desperation, and the data is showing that this describes roughly a third of everyone who de-listed last year.

This is not a normal spring setup. If you’re trying to understand what it means for housing prices, for household balance sheets, and for the broader economy, the answer connects to something far more important than mortgage rates.

When Minsky Comes Calling

As regular readers know, Hyman Minsky spent his career explaining how financial stability breeds instability. The longer the boom runs, the more reckless the lending gets.

First you get normal borrowing against real cash flows. Then speculative finance, where interest gets covered but principal never does. It doesn’t announce itself. It doesn’t ask for permission.

The same dynamic is playing out in multifamily housing. Spec building ran so far ahead of real demand during the immigration surge that construction levels blew past the 1970s peak, the last time the baby boom cohort was entering the workforce. That’s a structural mismatch that takes years to clear.

The smart operators who sat on dry powder through 2021, 2022, and 2023 while everyone else underwrote deals on pro-formas projecting 20% rent growth forever are now picking through the wreckage and buying assets well under replacement cost. The people still not being realistic about pricing are still holding. They’ll come around. They always do.

On top of that, copper demand is growing at 2.2% compounded annually. So even if they somehow close that $100 billion gap and tread water for a decade, demand is still outpacing supply the entire time. The market is already in deficit today. We’re consuming more than we’re producing right now.

• You have a stable job.

• Your income will continue.

• The future looks reasonably secure.

And right now, that security is eroding.

Yes, the latest jobs report showed a headline beat. But buried inside it were massive downward revisions. The benchmark revision for 2025 alone was roughly 900,000 jobs, implying about 400,000 fewer jobs created than previously reported.

That’s not a rounding error.

That’s structural weakness.

The bond market saw it immediately.

The Bond Market Is Telling You the Truth

After the headline jobs “beat,” yields initially spiked.

Then they reversed sharply.

The 10-year Treasury yield dropped back toward roughly 4.1%, falling about 7–10 basis points in short order.

That is not what a booming economy looks like.

That is what deteriorating growth expectations look like.

If debt, deficits, and foreign “dumping” were driving rates higher…as some commentators constantly claim…yields wouldn’t be falling.

Markets don’t hide stress in the most liquid bond market on Earth.

They price it immediately.

More Than 1 Million Homeowners Are Underwater

Now layer in another data point.

More than 1.1 million homeowners are underwater on their mortgages, a seven-year high.

That represents about 2.1% of mortgage borrowers, and the number of underwater homeowners has increased nearly 60% year-over-year.

Some will dismiss this as small relative to 2008.

But cycles turn at the margin.

The important variable isn’t the level.

It’s the direction.

If negative equity is rising rapidly…particularly in Sunbelt markets like Florida and Texas…that tells you prices are already softening where speculation was most intense.

And underwater borrowers behave differently.

They don’t spend aggressively.
They can’t refinance.
They’re vulnerable to job loss.

If unemployment ticks up even modestly, those homes move toward short sales and foreclosures…pushing comps lower and dragging more homeowners underwater.

That’s the feedback loop.

Demand Is Already at Cycle Lows

At 3.9 million annualized sales, turnover is extremely low.

When demand is already near cycle lows, it doesn’t take much additional pressure to tip prices lower.

And if labor markets continue to soften, supply pressure becomes inevitable.

Housing doesn’t need a crash to matter.

A nationwide nominal decline of 3–5% would be enough to:

• Increase negative equity

• Tighten credit conditions

• Reduce consumer confidence

• Lower household spending

Housing is the transmission mechanism.

Commercial Real Estate Is Flashing Red

And now we move to the part that should really get your attention.

Commercial real estate equities are getting hammered.

CBRE fell 13% in a single session, on top of a similar decline the day prior.

That’s not a small move.

That’s stress.

Yes, headlines blame AI disruption. But AI isn’t the root cause.

The underlying fundamentals were already fragile.

Commercial real estate sits at the intersection of:

• Employment

• Corporate profitability

• Bank balance sheets

• Credit availability

When labor demand weakens, office usage falls.
When consumer spending slows, retail properties suffer.
When refinancing becomes harder, valuations compress.

The AI narrative may be the catalyst.

But the structural weakness has been building for years.

But that doesn’t mean everything is healthy.

A grinding housing slowdown combined with commercial real estate stress can:

• Tighten credit standards

• Reduce construction employment

• Weaken household confidence

• Drag on nominal GDP

You don’t need a financial apocalypse to enter a recession.

You just need income growth to falter.

Housing Doesn’t Lie

You can spin CPI.
You can revise payrolls.
You can reinterpret GDP.

But you cannot fake a contract that never gets signed.

Existing home sales just posted their biggest monthly decline in nearly four years.

Underwater mortgages are rising sharply.

Every few months, a familiar panic grips financial media. A foreign country...usually China...does something with U.S. Treasuries, and suddenly the internet lights up with predictions of exploding interest rates, collapsing bond markets, and imminent yield-curve control. This week’s catalyst was a Bloomberg report claiming that Chinese officials have instructed domestic banks to limit their exposure to U.S. Treasuries.

On cue, the narrative machine went into overdrive.

China is dumping Treasuries. Demand is disappearing. The U.S. won’t be able to finance its deficits. Long-term rates are about to skyrocket. The Fed will be forced to step in, print trillions, and destroy the dollar.

You’ve heard this story before. Probably dozens of times.

And just like every previous iteration, it collapses the moment you stop listening to the narrative and start looking at the mechanics.

First, Look at the Actual Data

Before analyzing motives or geopolitics, start with the simplest possible question: what are yields actually doing?

If China limiting Treasury purchases were the existential threat it’s portrayed to be, the evidence should be obvious. Yields should be exploding higher. The long end of the curve should be blowing out. Bond vigilantes should be in full revolt.

But that’s not what the data shows.

Over the past year, the 10-year Treasury yield has fallen, not risen...drifting from roughly 4.6% to near 4.2%. That alone should immediately disqualify the most extreme claims circulating on social media.

Markets don’t hide stress in the world’s deepest bond market. If something systemic were breaking, you wouldn’t need a Bloomberg headline to notice it.

The Perpetual Yield-Curve-Control Myth

Every Treasury scare eventually arrives at the same conclusion: yield-curve control is inevitable.

The logic sounds airtight on the surface. If foreigners stop buying Treasuries, the U.S. government must offer higher yields. If yields rise too much, the Fed steps in to cap them. End of story.

Except that story has been told for more than a decade...and it’s been wrong every single time.

Interest rates did not explode during QE1. They didn’t explode during QE2. They didn’t explode after the pandemic deficits. They didn’t explode when foreign central banks reduced Treasury holdings after 2017. And they aren’t exploding now.

The reason is simple: Treasury yields are not set by foreign central banks.

Why China’s Treasury Holdings Don’t Matter the Way People Think

China’s official Treasury holdings peaked in November 2013 at approximately $1.32 trillion. Since then, they’ve declined steadily...or at least appeared to.

But even if we take the reported data at face value, the total size of China’s Treasury exposure...including proxy holdings in Belgium and Luxembourg...barely exceeds $750 billion.

That may sound like a large number. In the context of a $27 trillion Treasury market, it’s trivial.

More importantly, focusing on who holds Treasuries misses the real question: who sets the price?

The Eurodollar System Is the Real Buyer

Treasury pricing is determined not by foreign governments but by the global banking system...specifically, eurodollar banks.

These institutions don’t buy Treasuries because they love America or hate China. They buy Treasuries because of balance-sheet math.

Banks fund themselves in dollars at very low rates...often close to zero on deposits...and deploy that funding into dollar-denominated assets. When the spread between funding costs and Treasury yields becomes attractive, banks step in aggressively.

This is why yields don’t spiral out of control.

At some level, Treasuries become irresistible.

A Simple Thought Experiment

Imagine inflation is running at 5%. Holding cash guarantees a loss of purchasing power. Stocks are at all-time highs. Gold doesn’t yield anything and carries storage risk.

Now imagine Treasury yields spike to 8%, 9%, or even 10%.

Would there be “no demand” for Treasuries?

Of course not.

Households would buy them. Pension funds would buy them. Insurance companies would buy them. And most importantly, banks would buy them...at scale.

Banks don’t care about CPI. They care about spreads. If their dollar funding cost is 2% and they can earn 8% on Treasuries, they will buy virtually unlimited amounts.

This creates a self-stabilizing mechanism that narrative-driven forecasts ignore.

Debt, Deficits, and the Inverse Correlation Problem

Sound-money advocates are absolutely correct about one thing: U.S. debt and deficits are exploding.

Where many go wrong is assuming that exploding debt must cause exploding yields.

History shows the opposite.

Over long periods, Treasury yields are often inversely correlated with debt and deficits. The worse the fiscal position becomes, the stronger the demand for safe collateral.

That’s not intuition. That’s plumbing.

When risk rises, capital flows toward assets that satisfy liabilities. And global liabilities are overwhelmingly denominated in dollars.

Nominal GDP Is the Missing Variable

The only variable that reliably explains Treasury yields over time is nominal GDP growth.

When nominal GDP surges...as it did during the post-pandemic stimulus binge...yields rise.

When nominal GDP slows...as it has over the past year...yields fall.

China’s Treasury policy has nothing to do with it.

Until inflation expectations and nominal growth reaccelerate, long-term yields have no reason to spiral higher.

Why China Is Really Doing This

If limiting Treasury purchases doesn’t hurt the U.S., why is China doing it?

The answer is far less dramatic...and far more logical.

China’s economy is under severe stress. Growth is weak. Property markets are broken. Deflationary pressures are rising.

Beijing wants lower domestic interest rates.

By encouraging banks to shift balance-sheet capacity away from U.S. Treasuries and toward Chinese sovereign debt, officials can support local markets without resorting to overt stimulus.

This is about internal stabilization, not external sabotage.

The Political Theater Angle

Of course, geopolitics makes a convenient cover story.

Framing this as retaliation against U.S. policy plays well in headlines. But policymakers on both sides understand the reality: China selling Treasuries does not give them leverage over U.S. interest rates.

If it did, they would have used it years ago.

Why the Same Predictions Keep Failing

Every Treasury panic relies on the same flawed assumption: that demand is fixed.

It isn’t.

Demand is price-sensitive.

As yields rise, demand rises. As yields fall, demand falls. This feedback loop prevents the runaway scenarios that dominate online discourse.

Until someone explains why banks would suddenly stop caring about spreads, these predictions will continue to fail.

Mechanics Beat Narratives Every Time

China limiting Treasury purchases sounds dramatic. It photographs well. It fits pre-existing beliefs about decline and de-dollarization.

But it doesn’t change the mechanics of the system.

Treasury yields are anchored by balance sheets, liabilities, and nominal growth...not by headlines.

Until those fundamentals change, stories about bond-market collapse will remain what they’ve always been:

great content, terrible analysis.
